By-Laws of the Nathan Hale High School Chapter of the National Honor Society
Purpose
National Honor Society (NHS) is a service organization dedicated to supporting the entire student population of Nathan Hale High School through the volunteerism of its members. The purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship. To stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of Nathan Hale High School. In addition to improving student goodwill and provided community service opportunities to its members, NHS serves as a support system for students of the highest academic, leadership, and character standards. Nathan Hale NHS will meet bi-monthly (twice a month) in September, October, November, January, February, April, and May; and once during the months of December and March due to Winter and Spring Break.
Membership
National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are more than just an honor roll. The Honor Society chapter establishes rules for membership that are based upon a student's outstanding performance in the areas of: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character (plus citizenship for NJHS). These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built. Members will be inducted in a special ceremony based on the traditions of the National Honor Society.
Students who transfer from another school and left that school’s NHS chapter as a member in good standing and can provide a letter verifying such will be automatically inducted into the Nathan Hale Chapter of the National Honor Society. Transfer members must meet Nathan Hale’s Chapter standards within one semester in order to retain membership.
Specific standards for these criteria may vary from one school to the next. Such variations are acceptable as long as they do not fall below the national standards set by the National Council of the NHS and NJHS. All chapters are required to write down the criteria and procedures used in their local selection processes. The Honor Society adviser maintains copies of the local procedures and has them available upon request. Any student in grades 10 through 12 in a school with both an official charter of the National Honor Society and an affiliation with the national office is eligible for consideration for membership in NHS.
Scholarship:
Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 85 percent, B, 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent standard of excellence, or a higher cumulative average set by the local school's Faculty Council, meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character. At Hale High School we use a 5.0 scale. Students must have a 3.25 on a 5.0 scale, or a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Service:
This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. At Hale High School, we determine this to be a minimum of 12 clock hours of community service per semester. Service during the summer counts towards fall semester hours. All community service must be verified using the NHS Service Hours form. Those forms will then be verified by the current officers and sponsor. Every effort will be made to provide Hale NHS members with service opportunities during the school year, however this may not always be possible. Students should consider summer, vacation periods, and weekend service projects as well. Students who do not fulfill their service hours are not in good standing with NHS and will be removed from Hale’s Chapter roll.
Leadership:
Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others. At Hale High School, we define this as setting a positive example in the classroom, playing field, stage, or other public arena. It means having an attendance record of 85% of better. It also means attending and actively participating in at least 80% of NHS meetings.
Character:
The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle. At Nathan Hale High School, we define good character as a student having no referrals suspensions during one’s high school career. (modified September 23, 2005)
Citizenship:
The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic involvement, has a high regard for freedom, justice, and democracy, and demonstrates mature participation and responsibility through involvement with such activities as scouting, community organizations, and school clubs.
Chapter Dues and Expenses:
All members of the National Honor Society will pay dues in the amount of $10.00 $15.00 each year by October 1 (or nearest school day after). (modified September 23, 2005). These dues will be used to pay for national and state membership fees, member induction ceremony, Oklahoma conferences, service events, and graduation costs including honor stoles, honor cords, and NHS tassels. If student dues do not cover the chapter’s expenses, fundraisers will take place. Students unable to pay their dues may opt to fundraise them. Students who fail to pay their dues by end of first semester will be removed from the chapter roll.
Removal from NHS:
Members who fall below the minimum grade point average, attendance, pay dues, or do not complete their community service will be removed from the Nathan Hale High School chapter of the National Honor Society. Students may appeal removal due to meeting non-attendance if there are extenuating circumstances by writing a letter to the NHS Faculty committee. No more than one appeal per student will be considered. Decisions of the Nathan Hale High School NHS Faculty committee may be appealed to the Principal of Nathan Hale High School. All decisions of that Principal are final. (appeal segment added September 23, 2005) Students who resign or are dismissed for any other reason are never again eligible for membership into National Honor Society.
Chapter Activities
The Nathan Hale NHS chapter will determine one or more service projects each year. All members shall participate regularly in these projects. These projects shall have the following characteristics: fulfill a need within the school or community; have the support of the administration and the faculty; be appropriate and educationally defensible; be well planned, organized and executed. Each member shall have the responsibility for choosing and participating in an individual service project that reflects his or her particular talents and interests. This is in addition to the chapter projects to which all members contribute. We will publicize our projects in a positive manner.
Chapter Leadership
National Honor Society (NHS) will have a minimum leadership team of the Sponsor (Teacher/Staff of Nathan Hale High School), President, Treasurer, Secretary, and President Elect. Other officer positions may include Vice President(s), Parliamentarian, and Historian. The President and President-Elect will be selected by the Sponsor, based on highest class standing and teacher recommendations. Due to the amount of time involved in the works of National Honor Society, the Nathan Hale High School Chapter President/President Elect can not be President of another organization. They can, however, hold a lesser office. It is the policy of Nathan Hale High School to provide as many leadership opportunities for its members as possible. In that goal, all incoming seniors who have attended at least 85% of all meetings and are in good standing will be offered a leadership position, even if it means there are 3 vice presidents or two secretaries. The President-Elect will always be a Junior. All officer candidates will meet with the Chapter President and Sponsor and will work together to determine an appropriate office for each candidate. (inclusion of all seniors in good standing as officers segment added September 23, 2005)
Created September 14, 2004. Approved and enacted September 21, 2004
