Student drawing in art class

Husband and wife, Chad and Cynthia Bitzer, are art teachers at Hale High School. They both love to share their passion for art with students and help them explore their own creativity.

Cynthia believes that it is important to expose students to several different mediums, artists, and styles. “As a high school student, I came from a small school that only had sketchbooks and pencil as artistic tools,” she said. “It took years for me to gain exposure to many forms of art. I want my students to have that experience early on so they can decide which artistic skills to develop.” She also noted that is exciting to watch students try things that get them out of their comfort zones.

When asked about some of the highlights of Hale’s art program, Chad mentioned the wide variety of projects including drawing, painting, leatherwork, basket weaving, ceramics, sculpture, mural design, and print making. He said that one of his favorite projects every year is when students get to participate in “Play me, Tulsa” which is an event hosted by Saied Music Company. Students are invited to paint pianos that are presented during Mayfest and then relocated to public spaces.

“I would like to see students continuing to push boundaries and create projects that translate into inspiration for their community,” said Cynthia.
